IN addition to Margate Airport marking its fifth anniversary in November, there is even more cause to celebrate, as it was revealed that the airport will be increasing the number of flights in December. During a media briefing held at the municipal chambers on Tuesday, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu confirmed that the airport is set to increase its scheduled number of flights to OR Tambo International Airport over the festive season. She said this was revealed at a recent presentation by the Department of Development Planning Services, the custodians of operations at the airport. “The increase is due to the increased volume of travellers expected during this period. Explaining the decision, the department indicated that statistical trends over the past four years indicate that the airport experiences its heaviest traffic over the December-January holiday period,” said Mqwebu. The schedule will run from December 7, 2018 to January 13, 2019. During this period, there will be a flight departing from Margate airport at 11.10 am every day and another at 5 pm. “The municipality welcomes this development and is confident that it will have a positive spin-off for tourism and the economic development of our area,” said Mqwebu.
