AS Margate awaits the results of the national Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar competition, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) came first in this year’s KwaZulu-Natal Greenest Municipality Competition.

The award comes with a R250 000 prize for which the municipality will have to submit a business plan to the Department of Environmental Affairs detailing how the funds will be spent.

The aim of the competition is for municipalities to reduce waste and promote recycling.

RNM spokesperson Simon April said winning the provincial leg automatically qualifies RNM to enter the competition at national level.

“At the moment Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is currently evaluated for the national competition and awaits results from the department. We stand to scoop R1 million if we win,” said April.

Voting for KykNet’s Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar competition closed on Tuesday and the winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Margate beat Richards Bay and Vryheid to be the province’s sole representative.

The winning town will receive R1 million worth of marketing exposure from KykNer, plus a 30-second advert on KykNet encouraging viewers to visit the town.
