BEACH-GOERS in Margate with hopes of making use of the final bits of sunny days before the winter cold kicks in properly, might have to hold that thought as the Margate beach is currently closed due to contamination from a nearby sewer pipe.

According to Ugu District Municipality, the contamination came into the beach through Hunters stream. “A sewer pipe on Erasmus Road in Margate collapsed, blocking a manhole which caused an overflow into Hunters stream,” said municipal spokesperson France Zama.

Zama said that the municipality was, however, working to resolve the issue and has thus closed the beach to the public as a precautionary measure.

“Our Environmental Health Services Unit are continuously monitoring the contamination levels and will open the beach for swimming once it is certified safe and within the standard limits for utilisation,” said Zama.
