One of the settlers who was part of a meeting held in December last year with municipal officials, the Margate SAPS and local councillor Phumlani Gumbi, said that the informal settlers were given until the next meeting, which was scheduled for January 28, to vacate the grave site.

“Some of them did evacuate the site, however, others are still here. They are just ignoring the instruction,” Gumbi said. Several attempts have been made to get comment from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, however, none had been received. Margate SAPS spokesperson Captain Mfeka said that he was not aware of the meeting and therefore cannot comment on the matter. Gumbi confirmed his presence at the meeting held in December. “Yes I can confirm that a meeting was held in my presence as the cluster whip. The informal settlers were told to evacuate the graveyard and as far I know those people left. I do not know where the people still living there come from,” said Gumbi.
