UGU District Municipality hosted its last Women’s Month celebration in style last Wednesday at Ntelezi Msane Heritage Centre in Mtwalume. The event was attended by women from all local municipalities under Ugu.

The theme for the day was “The year of OR Tambo: women united in moving South Africa forward by overcoming the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality”.

Ugu mayor Cllr Mondli Chiliza also launched the Mayoral Water Plants Maintenance Programme at the event. He said the programme has benefitted 386 women from across the district, who have received employment, thus helping to fight poverty.

The women will be cleaning the water plant sites on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will receive a stipend of R1 000 a month.

“This is one way we are assisting rural women, who are too young to receive a grant and too old to work, but are facing serious poverty. Also, our water plants will be in good state all the time,” said Chiliza.
