Mayors meet ‘amakhosi’

UGU District Municipality mayor Cllr Mondli Chiliza held a two-day meeting with the district’s Amakhosi at Margate Hotel last week to discuss developmental issues and to find possible solutions to challenges that hinder development in their areas.

The meeting was also attended by local municipality mayors Cllr Sizwe Ngcobo from Umzumbe, Cllr Thabani Dube from Umdoni and Cllr Dixie Nciki from Umuziwabantu.

Ugu district general managers presented projects that are envisaged in the areas of Amakhosi, but the most topical issue raised by all was water.

Chiliza said this was a special meeting for him as it opened an opportunity for government to meet traditional leadership in person and tackle issues.

“This is the second meeting. In our first meeting we met the executive and agreed to have this meeting with all amakhosi,” said Chiliza.

He added he has instructed general managers to ensure that they assist amakhosi with their issues.

“As a district we have great respect for Amakhosi and we want to make sure that we strengthen our relations,” said Chiliza.

He said new systems will be introduced to ensure that communities get better services in the areas of amakhosi.
