HEALTH MEC Sibongiseni Dlomo visited Ugu District on Monday and took part in a health workers march as part of his Anti-Back-Street-Abortion Campaign, during which they removed the “safe abortion” stickers put up by bogus doctors and sangomas who claim to perform abortions safely and pain-free.

During the march Dlomo handed over a memorandum of understanding to the SAPS asking them to work with the health department in this campaign.

Ugu Health spokesperson Thabisile Ngobo said the police agreed to be part of the campaign.

Ngcobo said the memorandum stated that illegal abortions are not allowed and those who perform them will be arrested.

Ngcobo said the aim of the campaign is to urge women with unwanted pregnancies to visit reputable clinics and hospitals if they want to terminate their pregnancy.

Dlomo asked the community to make use of health facilities and not use back-street facilities as they are very risky.

He said clinics, government hospitals and private hospitals have been authorised to perform such procedures.

Dlomo also asks health worker to respect a woman’s decision if she wants to terminate her pregnancy.

The health department warns those who perform abortions without being qualified to do so, will be arrested.
