PRE-PAID electricity systems will be installed in 66 houses in Merlewood by April, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) confirmed at a public meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting was held at the Merlewood Youth Centre where RNM mayor, Nomusa Mqwebu, addressed beneficiaries and introduced the contractor and consultant who will be working on the project.

The value of the project is about R4.6 million, and not only includes electrification of the 66 houses, but also infrastructure that needs to be installed for the remaining houses that are yet to be built.

Work has already commenced.

“The 66 houses will be connected and prepaid meters installed, however, the electricity infrastructure will be constructed to cover the remainder of the project so that when the remaining housing are built they are connected,” said Mqwebu.

The contractor is BTMN Engineers and the consulting company is Hamsa Consulting Engineers. Eskom was also at the meeting.

In November last year, residents took to the streets angry with the RNM for not installing electricity in their houses.

Residents have been living in them for more than a year now.
