Mobile food vendors surface in Sheppie

BUYING a take-away was not such a big deal a few months ago and was relatively affordable for some.

Whether it was a weekly or monthly treat, it depended on the budget.

Since times are tough and food prices have risen drastically, this luxury has now become scarce.

However, depending how you look at it, a few people in Port Shepstone have taken this opportunity and manifested it into a business by becoming food hawkers.

While some rejoiced at this initiative due to the low prices of the take-away, business owners say this has affected their profit.

The Fever recently received information from a restaurant owner about people who circulate the town selling food from their car boot.

“There are people going around in their cars selling food out of their boot.

“They have no health certificate or any protective wear and no legal permission to sell food,” the man claimed.

“This is affecting business for us shop owners, who follow the rules.

“The food is sold cheaply because their overheads are kept to a minimum,” he said.

The restaurant owner added this has being going for a long time and he has brought it to the attention of traffic police.

“I am still waiting for feedback,” he added.

Simon April, spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said that food may only be sold in an area that is designated for such.

“The hawker must have a certificate of acceptability issued by Environmental Health as well as a business licence,” he said.

If these three criteria are not met, then the selling of food is prohibited, he added.

“Law enforcement has a responsibility of enforcing it if there is any contravention of the above,” said April.
