Municipalities told to restrict water consumption

2016-03-03 06:00

THE KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has directed KZN municipalities to present, before the end of this week, their plans to effect a 15% reduction in consumer demand for water.

KZN MEC for Cogta Nomusa Dube-Ncube said this at a press conference in Durban on Tuesday

“If these water savings are achieved now, the amount of water in affected catchments could last until the next rains come. If we do not act now, the water taps of some four to five million people who live within these catchments will run dry,” said Dube-Ncube.

Dube-Ncube said the farming community has reported massive live stock losses as well as crops.

Ugu district also experienced a lot draught and if the plan is implemented it could be for the best. Ugu District was contacted on their plans on the proposed cuts but had not replied at the time of going to press. - Supplied.
