Municipality fails resident on promises

N Albersville resident said she has tried to get her water bill adjusted because of a water leak at her home since May 2015.

She had emailed and called the Ugu District Municipality many times asking them for an adjustment to the account, but unsuccessfully.

The resident says she was told she first had to pay her account of more than R4 000, due to the leak, before an adjustment can be made.

“Since my first email nothing has been done, it has been over eight months now,” she said.

One of the responses received from Ugu said: “Thank you for the leak report received. We will monitor your account for the next three months to determine the average usage of water and then adjust the account accordingly. Can you kindly forward your meter readings monthly between the 1st and the 5th [of the month] via email please.”

The resident has been forwarding the readings every month, but no adjustment has been made.

“After sending the readings I received an email saying that the adjustment will only reflect on my next statement, which would go out on 11 October, 2015. I was told to pay what was showing on my statement and thereafter the amount on my account will be adjusted. The difference was R558.85.”

Ugu was contacted regarding the adjustment processes. Spokesperson France Zama assures the community that they will take care of water issues. This includes water leakages and bills that have risen astronomically.

Zama said on receipt of leak reports and adjustment requests, the municipality monitors the account that has requested an adjustment for a period of three months.

“To ensure that the leak has been properly repaired and to establish the customer’s average usage we monitor the customer’s account. After three months or three consecutive readings the adjustment is passed,” he said.

Zama said the municipality’s billing office will attend to the customer’s complaint and will ensure that the issue is dealt with accordingly, and will liaise with the affected customer.
