Municipality ready for the Easter weekend

2018-04-05 06:00

IT’S all systems go for the municipality’s water and sanitation systems for the upcoming extended Easter weekend when hundreds of visitors are expected to be part of the Easter festivities in the district.

Comprehensive plans have been developed to ensure a hassle-free Easter peak season with regards to the provision of water and sanitation services, and additional resources are in place to respond to any water and sanitation-related emergencies.

A lot of emphasis has been placed upon the availability of adequate resources, which include human resources, water tankers, vehicles and standby private service providers to enhance the municipality’s ability to respond swiftly to service-delivery emergencies as efficiently as possible.

During peak season periods, our supply networks of Umtamvuna and Bhobhoyi Water Treatment Works experience an extremely high demand for water supply, which places severe strain on our water network.

We will be on high alert at all hot spots and will ensure that in the case where there is prolonged water supply interruptions, alternative measures are implemented within the minimum amount of time.

Provision has also been made for rural communities where water tankers will be assigned to supply water where our water networks have still not reached.

The municipality is forever determined to fulfil its constitutional obligation; that of extending and sustaining water access to all the 85 municipal wards that constitute the four local municipalities.

We are continuously engaged in expanding and maintaining our infrastructure to enable us to ensure that all communities have adequate access to our services. Further- more, we have also ensured that our disaster management services are activated this season and the provision of emergency vehicles, personnel and specialised vehicles has been made available to attend to any disaster-related incidences within the four local municipalities which fall within the jurisdiction of the Ugu District.

The municipality’s management and employees remain committed to ensuring that our communities receive uninterrupted water supply during this period and beyond.

And our call-centre operations will also be beefed up with personnel to meet the call demand during the day, after hours and on public holidays.

Our operators will be readily available to interact with the community on water and sanitation services through our Facebook page: Ugu Municipality Talk, which is updated on a daily basis, and the 24-hour call centre at 08000 WATER (92837) or (039 688 5830/36 or SMS line 44751.
