Municipality sustains services during Easter weekend

2018-04-12 06:01

A SUBSTANTIAL amount of effort had been directed towards ensuring that municipal services of water and sanitation were sustained during the extended Easter weekend.

All measures and contingency plans that were developed for this Easter weekend yielded positive results as there were no material service interruptions of water supply across the district.

This was also coupled with a strict monitoring mechanism which was conducted through the Rapid Response Committee comprised of all key service departments championed by the Municipal Manager.

In preparation for this season, lots of emphasis was placed on the availability of adequate resources which included human resources, water tankers, vehicles and standby private service providers to enhance the municipality’s ability to swiftly respond to service delivery emergencies as efficiently as possible.

Our supply networks of Umtamvuna and Bhobhoyi Water Treatment Works which are notorious for caving in during the peak seasons were equal to the task this weekend and efficiently responded to the demand and there were no major water disruptions experienced except for minimal breaks, which were swiftly attended to by our experienced teams of technicians.

As a precautionary measure, all lagoons along the coast remain closed for swimming and other recreational activities after the detection of high contamination levels by our Environmental Health Services.

Indications are that this contamination is a result of the recent heavy rains that washdown sources of contamination from upstream. All beaches however, remain open and safe for bathing.

Our Environmental Health Services are closely monitoring the lagoons and conducting tests on a daily basis. All lagoons will remain closed until further notice.

The municipality’s management and employees remain committed to ensuring that our communities receive an uninterrupted service of water supply and measures are in place to extend and sustain water access across the district.
