Municipality to consider public input on 2018/19 budget

2018-05-17 06:01

UGU District Municipality’s service delivery draft budget of R1 115 239, 769 for the 2018/19 fiscal year has undergone public scrutiny, receiving a go-ahead from the different communities with minor editions linked to water and sanitation services and other special programmes.

As the district municipality together with our family of local municipalities, I would like to convey my sincere gratitude to the communities that we visited for showing great interest in the proposed budget and for constructively engaging us on the presented draft budget on behalf of their communities.

The inputs presented by the communities will be taken into consideration prior to the final adoption of the budget by council.

From 1 July 2018, our municipality will commence to implement projects.

Programmes under the new budget aimed at developing the different communities and the people that live in those communities. The sizable allocations on all water and sanitation services will be used strategically and for maximum benefit to the communities.

We have made provision for free basic water and sanitation services to the indigent communities at R64 529 000 for Umdoni Municipality, R57 040 000 for Umzumbe Municipality, R146 778 000 for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and R42 632 000 for Umuziwabantu Municipality.

Also, our water and sanitation services long-term goal is to ensure that all our infrastructure can meet the demand even during the busiest times of the year where we see an influx of visitors, we have therefore ensured that significant funding of R285 889 000 is set aside for the development of water and sanitation infrastructure. This amount will be accordingly distributed to the four local municipalities.

We also note that numerous requests have been made to top up the allocation of some special programmes such as the HIV and Aids programmes which was initially allocated R550 000 and the Mayoral Bursary Fund which was allocated R500 000 among others.

Our journey to triumph over the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality with the allocation of R9 345 495 for the EPWP programme received applause from the community sighting how such programmes have significantly improved the lives of the impoverished families in the community.

The final budget will be adopted by the end of May 2018 and the new financial year will commence on 1 July 2018.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.
