Municipality to construct youth academy

2018-09-13 06:01

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Social Development in partnership with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has identified and handed over a site for the construction of the Youth Development Academy which will be named after the esteemed leader of Lower South Coast, Tolomani Mnyaiza.

This was proposed by the Ward 23 community of Bhobhoyi due to his contribution in fighting for the promotion of the rights of young people within the Ugu District and his passion and dedication in community development.

Mnyaiza also served as the chairperson of the African National Congress Youth League in his tender age and served in various positions within the political regional structures and later became the Ugu District Municipality mayor.

According to the Department of Social Development, who are the custodians and the funders of the project, the academy’s objective will be to equip young people with entrepreneur skills which will add value in curbing unemployment and contributes to job opportunities.

In addition this project will profile young people especially those coming from the destitute families in order to have a database which the department will focus on in terms of developing them to be future employers and also to be employable.

In this project, the Department of Social Development will work closely with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality especially in identifying and mobilizing the young people from the destitute families with the help of Sukumasakhe teams and Social Workers who will play an integral part.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has availed a site in Bhobhoyi in Ward 23 in order for the appointed contractor to start the work at the site that was handed over on 14 August.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will be the fourth municipality to have the Youth Develop- ment Academy following Zululand, uMkhanyakude and Eshowe.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Social and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will open the academy officially once the structure is completed.
