Museum to be named after Madikizela-Mandela

2018-07-05 06:00

THE Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council has unanimously agreed to name the newly constructed Port Shepstone Maritime Museum after the late ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

At a recent meeting, the council saw it befitting that the state-of-the-art Port Shepstone Maritime Museum be named after an ANC stalwart who made an enormous contribution towards the political freedom of the oppressed in South Africa.

Madikizela-Mandela, who was usually referred to as uMama weSizwe, did not only focus on the struggle for the emancipation of women, but also against the apartheid regime.

The unanimous decision to name the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum after Madikizela-Mandela follows the decision that was also unanimously taken by the council to name the new and bigger Port Shepstone Library after the late Oliver Reginald Tambo, popularly known as OR.

The municipality will now process this resolution and pass it to the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in KZN so that the facilities are named after these ANC stalwarts who are deserving to be honoured and recognised.

The naming of these public facilities follows the naming of the main road in Port Shepstone after Nelson Mandela, which is now known as Nelson Mandela Drive.
