Nair, don’t express allegations

2016-06-16 06:00

MR Nair, can you enumerate? Was your statement that “South Africa’s children have joined the highest echelons of academic achievement” ironic? South Africa’s education system has been rated 30 out of 34 internationally, with number one being the best. After Britain had abandoned the Outcomes Based Education, when it had been proved a dismal failure to educate its children, South Africa instituted this system. Then a regulation was introduced, promoting every child annually, irrespective of results. How could a child, who had failed to master the first year at school and subsequent years, acquire knowledge and the ability to obtain a matriculation certificate – despite the fact that 30% is the pass mark, i.e. three marks out of 10? Numerous schools have been involved in cheating, organised by the teachers. Recently the media has published the scandal of teachers “buying” their posts. Mr Nair I suggest that you peruse the anonymous letter to the press, printed below yours, “Nursery school teacher’s ‘other life’ is scary.” According to my culture, cheating/plagiarism and falsification of documentation are viewed with abhorrence, as “eating the bread of shame”.

Matriculation used to comprise examinations of the last three years’ schooling, the subjects to be written concurrently. Failure in one subject resulted in failure to obtain a matriculation certificate, which now can be obtained, by writing one subject “umpteen” times. University exams, comprising all the subjects, were written at the end of the academic year. Failure in one subject resulted in failure of the year.

If a student is influenced to participate in destruction of public property, then surely he/she is unable to reason. Please name one university, which did not participate in malicious damage to property.

My letter is based on supported facts. Hence, I strongly advise you, Mr Nair, not to express allegations, derived from your unfounded conjectures, labelling me as a Sparrow syndrome sufferer. Perhaps you can explain, why during Christmas holidays, I assisted the indigenous locals at Slough, in the Eastern Cape to become self-sufficient in a project, initiated by the Catholic Brothers.

These locals had been totally dependent on Operation Hunger for survival. Consequently, I recommend that you, yourself, should practise what you preach.

Transformation can only take place when the ruling party acknowledges and eradicates the increasing, rampant corruption. Our President, the first man, with more than 700 charges against him, including the rape of a young woman, entrusted to his care, should serve as an example in this country.
