National Golden Oldies Rugby Festival returning to South Coast

2018-09-13 06:01

RUGBY veterans will dust off their boots when the Fidelity Security National Golden Oldies Festival takes place at Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds in Uvongo from September 20-22.

It has been 15 years since the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last played host to this festival, which was a huge success, and the 2018 edition is expected to be the biggest and best yet.

A total of 32 teams comprising of 18 to 22 players over the age of 35 will turn back the clock for three days of rugby and fellowship, with live music and celebrations every evening.

The laws of the game are modified to reflect the spirit of Golden Oldies rugby. Most notably, players wear colour-coded shorts or bibs based on age, which restrict tackling and distance players may cover with ball-in-hand.

Hosts, Riversmead South Coast Warriors Sugar Daddies, will kick-off the action on Thursday, September 20, prior to the official opening later in the evening.

Games will be played all day on Friday and Saturday, with the closing ceremony on Saturday night. Prizes will be awarded for Most Attractive Rugby, Best Dressed and Best Spirit.

Highlighting the ethos of Golden Oldies rugby, the festival will raise funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.

Since 1980, the organisation has acted as Rugby’s Caring Hands, providing physical, psychological and emotional assistance to over 500 players.
