A NEW athletics club was launched in Albersville on Saturday to cater for runners in the Ugu district.

The Ugu Athletics Club launch was attended by well known athletes, including Blanche “Queen of the Road” Moila and legendary Comrades Marathon runner Tiger Gono.

Club chairman Pardon Mathebula said the club came as a result of a call made by athletes in the community.

“This is a result of the community and in particular the people of Port Shepstone and Marburg,” he said.

“The call was for a home with an environment in which athletes can rediscover their lost active lifestyle. As a result we have developed a vision that says this organisation must be well managed, especially professionally for the benefit of all who live in it,” said Mathebula.

He said the club will focus on road running, walking, cross country and youth development.

Club president Adam Moosa said he is confident that the club will grow from strength to strength and he endorses the progressive move.
