New Ugu mayor soon to be announced

2017-01-26 06:02

AFTER the death of Ugu mayor councillor Tolomane Mnyaiza, the question on everyone’s mind is who going to be the next one.

Many might think that since councillor Mondli Chiliza is deputy mayor automatically the mayoral seat is his, however, in politics things just do not get passed over to the next in line.

ANC Lower South Coast spokesperson Sipho Dlamalala confirmed that former KZN Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni is ANC Regional Council’s first choice, followed by deputy mayor Chiliza and lastly the former Ugu mayor and current speaker, Ntombifikle Gumede. Nkonyeni is originally from Gamalakhe and is the wife of the late Ray Nkonyeni after whom the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is named.

Dlamalala said there were a number of other suggested candidates, however, Nkonyeni, Chiliza and Gumede were candidates officially agreed upon. He said it is now for the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to select who they feel is suitable for the position.

“After the PEC have discussed this they will then present the name to the national committee and then the new mayor will be introduced to the community of Ugu,” said Dlamalala.

He also clarified that the community is not involved in the election and nomination process of mayors, only ward councillors.“The ANC as a political party reserves the right to make its own decision as to who leads a particular structure,” said Dlamalala.

He said the people of Ugu should expect the new mayor to be announced after the sitting of the PEC in the next two to three weeks.

Nkonyeni was contacted for comment about her name being raised as first choice, but declined to comment at this stage.
