THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Shelley Beach, and the Margate SAPS, were called to Margate beach on Monday after someone called to say they had witnessed a drowning.

The person said that she saw a man and two children slip on the rocks and fall into the water and police were called to the scene.

Port Shepstone SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid said the police search the area, however, they did not find any sign of bodies.

“A statement was obtained from the eye witness who allegedly saw the incident happening.

“At this stage no one has been reported to the police as being missing,” said Wiid.

The incident happened at about 5 pm on Monday.

She cautioned the public against swimming in areas where there are slippery rocks and rip currents, as well as places where there are no lifeguards. “Children should always be accompanied by an adult when going swimming. People should be careful of slippery rocks and rip currents which can sweep them out to sea,” said Wiid

“Also, do not go swimming when you have consumed alcohol or any medication that makes you drowsy. Avoid going swimming in the dark and in deserted places. And never ever go into deep water if you cannot swim,” said Wiid.
