Nzimande’s ‘mother claims’ untrue

2017-06-29 06:01

BLADE Nzimande’s claim that his mother was discriminated against because of her race is not true.

When I started teaching in Maritzburg in 1957, I was paid less than my male colleagues, and once married I was “demoted” to temporary staff. I was not allowed to join a pension scheme or enjoy any of the perks that came the way of the male teachers.

As a result, after decades of teaching, it was only in the past few years before I retired that I was able to join a pension scheme.

Mrs Nzimande and those of us married women who taught before the rules were changed were all in the same boat.
