THE Ugu district community adhered to government’s mandate of marking 2017 as the year of OR Tambo.

Last Wednesday we hosted a district-wide celebration in honour of one of our founding fathers of the country’s constitutional democracy that has led to our communities being beneficiaries of service delivery.

Led by the acting MEC for Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Weziwe Thusi, the district took a walk down memory lane and remembered OR Tambo’s selfless struggles that fought for human dignity and equal rights.

This year has been declared a year of unity by South Africans in moving the country forward. We have ensured this is filtered into our district through the implementation of programmes that move our district forward and triumph over the scourge of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

Our district has come a long way in addressing challenges of inequality. We have worked tirelessly to ensure provision of dignified sanitation and access to the basic right of water. The communities we serve have access to housing, electricity and roads. Our government has ensured that our communities are beneficiaries of free education and decent health care.

Our efforts to fight unemployment and inequality also continue. We have implemented numerous poverty alleviation programmes that benefit our youth and women through their employment in our unemployed graduate programme, the water and sanitation facilities maintenance programme, our expanded public works programme and the mayoral bursary fund programme, among others.

We have come a long way in ensuring we create an enabling environment for communities to develop, which is one of the visions OR Tambo believed in.

In light of this, our municipality and its family of local municipalities will continue to ensure that the developmental dreams of our forefathers of democracy are kept alive.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities.
