MOTHERS were treated to something different and something pretty at the Alfred County Orchid Society at the Mother’s Day display at Hibiscus Coast Mall on Saturday.

The display featured a variety of species.

While long-standing orchid growers swopping knowledge and buying new strands to grow, beginners also got the opportunity to learn all there was about the striking plants.

Organiser Martin Rautenbach and club member for 40 years, said the organisation’s focus is currently on preserving indigenous endangered species of orchids.

“Orchids are not the type of plants you can pick and grow somewhere else, they die. This is why we try to raise awareness about conserving them where we can.”

Anne Naidu, who bought a purple orchid, said the display aroused her interest in the plants.

“I’ve never grown any before, this will be my first one and I’m excited,” said Naidu.
