THE South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a business breakfast at the Umdlalo Lodge in Umtentweni on Friday.

The main speaker was the director general from the KZN Office of the Premier (OTP), Frikkie Brooks.

At the event Brooks gave an overview of the provincial planning commission.

“The commission advises and make recommendations on matters related to a long-term strategic development perspective and vision of the province.

“It encompasses the instance of business, government and civil society as co-owners in the provincial growth and development plan.”

Brooks said a recent OTP survey revealed that 36% of the population were dissatisfied with governance in the province.

“Sixty four percent of the population indicated they were happy with the rate of service delivery as ninety percent of households had access to running water, eighty percent to electricity and another eighty percent to sanitation services.

“The one thing that most people were dissatisfied with was the rate of economic development, and the lack of jobs,” said Brooks.

He said members posed questions about the availability of development opportunities in rural areas, infrastructure development as well as governance in KZN.

“Overall the provincial planning commission was well received, we got good responses from the audiences,” said Brooks.

President of the Chamber Vijay Naidoo said Brooks’s talk was invaluable for its members.
