AFTER months of living in fear residents in the Protea Park area will be able to sleep with ease this winter after a python which was spotted in area was caught on Saturday night.

The python was first spotted in Palmview about three months ago by a resident who caught a video of it on his cellphone and posted it on Facebook.

At the time, Pure Venom and other local snake catchers were dispatched to the area but could not find it during their search.

On Saturday the snake was seen again in Protea Park and this time van der Merwe came out in the knick of time and rescued the three metre rock python under the watchful eye of community members.

Van der Merwe said that the snake was forced to climb onto a tree due to a veld fire in the area and he managed to find it unharmed.

He said that the snake was handed over to Pure Venom for a chip and would be released in a nature reserve.
