IN commemoration of Autism Awareness Month, St Martin De Porres Comprehensive School held its fourth Autism Spectrum Disorder Parent Support Group at the school on Friday, April 20.

The support group was run by the Therapy/Medical team from the school consisting of the occupational therapist, speech-language therapist, audiologist and professional nurse.

Parents of children with Autism who attended the support group were given information on autism spectrum disorder, the quadrants of impairment, tools and strategies to assist in adding structure to their child’s life, and toilet training.

Parents were also assisted in making individualised visual schedules for their children.

Speech and language therapist at the school, Kimeshree Moodley, said the event was a huge success. She said for the next parent support group, parents will be encouraged to become “researchers” for their children.

The next parent support group is scheduled to take place during term 3 of the school year. For more information on the autism parent support groups held, contact the therapy/medical team at 039 682 5725.
