Pensioner attacked at retirement village

2018-05-31 06:01

RESIDENTS at the Margate Retirement Village are still in shock after a 76-year-old resident was taken into hospital after being attacked and robbed at the retirement home on Friday.

Police said that the incident happened at about 10 pm on Friday night when the woman found two unknown men inside her bedroom as she was going to sleep.

She said that the men then tied up her and demanded money. While tied up the men also assaulted her on her face and she was admitted to Margate Netcare after sustaining bruises to her face.

“Upon investigation, police noticed that entry was gained through a broken window,” said Mfeka adding that the men fled with some of her valuables.

CEO at the retirement village Andrew Crooks said that the incident came as a great shock and that they would be taking additional precautions to ensure safety at the residence where necessary.

“The victim of this unacceptable attack is recovering with her family, after having spent time in hospital for treatment and tests. All of our thoughts and prayers are with her at this time,” said Crooks.

Crooks said that the residence would be working with the police as well other external security forces to further investigate how the incident could have happened.

“We are trying to keep the rest of the residents calm by being transparent about the whole situation, as we do not want to encourage any unverified speculations,” said Crooks.

“Safety and security in our villages remains the highest priority and any such incidents involving the most vulnerable in our communities is one too many,” Crooks said.

Margate detectives are investigating a house robbery and no arrest have been made as yet.
