A PENSIONER was lucky to escape just before his car was engulfed in flames on Perch Road in Margate last Friday.

Stephen van der Berg (62) of Perch Road said he was about two kilometres away from his house when he smelt something burning in his car.

When he checked on what might be the problem he saw flames at the back of the car and immediately stopped and got out.

“I think maybe there was a leak or breakage in the petrol pipe and a small flame from the engine ignited the fire, because it was not long after I left my house that the fire broke out,” said Van der Berg.

The car, a VW beach buggy, was completely burnt beyond repair and Van der Berg said although it carried sentimental value for him, he was just glad to have made it out alive.

“I’ve had the car for a very long time. It was old but we have been through a lot together,” he said.

Margate SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said although police reported to the scene, no case was opened by the owner of the car.
