MNAFU Hall in Umzumbe Municipality Ward 19 went up in flames in the early hours of Monday morning. The cause of the fire is still unknown and Hibberdene SAPS are investigating.

Umzumbe Municipality mayor Sydney Gumede said it is shocking that the hall could be burnt like this.

“There was no unrest in the area and nothing was suspected to be a problem in the community,” said Gumede.

Umzumbe spokesperson Trevor Khanyile said the fire services were called to the scene by community members at 3am.

“Fire and rescue services arrived at the scene and found the hall engulfed in fire.

“Fortunately, there was no one in the hall,” he said.

Khanyile said it was not the first time this happened.

“This is the second time that a hall has been burnt by unknown individuals. The KwaHlongwa hall Ward 14 was also burnt without reason.”

Khanyile said there is never a reason to validate the burning of a community facility.
