SAPS are warning communities, especially females, not to accept lifts from strangers and not to be out and about on the streets and late at night where they become easy targets.

This follows a recent incident where two females were raped after leaving a tavern in Hibberdene and were hitchhiking home.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said in a statement, that the two females, aged 23 and 24, were hitchhiking when an Uno stopped and offered them a lift.

“The driver of the vehicle then drove to Mfazazane and stopped there. When the complainant in this case asked him why they stopping, the driver told them they were waiting for someone.”

She said one of the girls managed to escape from the vehicle leaving the complainant behind.

“The complainant was left in the car and the driver and his male passenger dragged her to a nearby building where there was another male waiting.

“The suspects then forced her to the floor, threatened her with a broken bottle and raped her. After raping her the three suspects fled,in the Uno” said Wiid.

A rape case is being investigated by Hibberdene police.
