Political parties gearing up for Gamalakhe by-election

POLITICAL parties and the Electoral Commission on the lower South Coast are gearing up for another round of by-elections after one position became vacant following the death of an ANC councillor.

In Gamalakhe ward 28, a by-election has been called following the death of Sibusiso Vanda, who succumbed to illness in June.

This would be the second by-election in Gamalakhe within the year as Vanda replaced Mzwandile Mncube, who died last year in July, also after a long illness.

According to Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) spokesman Siphiwe Yeni, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Maxwell Mbili had already declared the vacancy by writing to the commission last Thursday and the election date has been set for October, 24, 2018. The gates will open from 8 am until 4 pm

Yeni said the voter registration dates would be on the September 8 and September 9.

“We urge all Gamalakhe community to register to vote and also update their addresses,” said Yeni. He also mentioned that political parties should submit their candidates as the closing date would be October 1.

Voting locations in the district would be Gamalakhe Civic Hall, International Assemblies of God, African Congregation Church and Sizanokuhle Care Centre.

IEC statistics indicate the voter turnout in the 2017 by-election was 45.94% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 91.41% of valid votes.
