Political party weighs in on Ezinqoleni financial irregularities

2018-09-20 06:02

THE caucus of the Democratic Alliance have noted with concern the result of the Cogta special investigations and have noted the recommendations from the office of the MEC for Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs. This is an issue that has come a long way and we are pleased to eventually see the outcome. The DA caucus have pushed for the completion of this report since the irregularities were uncovered by the Auditors early in 2017.

Now that the findings indicate corruption and mismanagement at a large scale, the DA will support the recommendations from the MEC in the hope that stolen money will be recovered and that the culprits be held accountable. The DA will not accept a watered down version of how to deal with the thieves and demands that the full extent of the law be unleashed.

The Ray Nknonyeni area cannot afford to allow any theft or wastage to happen as we live in an impoverished region with huge unemployment challenges. As the investigations into “State Capture” are shown to us live on television, the realisation that a smaller version took place on our doorstep is of extreme concern.

As a responsible caucus serving on the Ray Nkonyeni municipality, dedicated to serving the people of this region, the DA will ensure that nothing gets swept under the carpet and that the end result will serve as a deterrent for anyone contemplating “stealing from the poor”.

As a further measure to assist the criminal investigation, the DA demands “lifestyle audits” to be instituted against the implicated officials and councillors suspected of wrong doing.

The DA call on all the other parties serving on the RNM council to support the recommendations as outlined by the MEC together with the above proposal from the DA. The DA caucus also calls on anyone with knowledge of the corrupt activities to come forward and assist with the criminal and departmental investigation in order to finalise this saga.
