Port Edward residents’ water woes

2015-11-26 06:00

PORT Edward residents have been left high and dry since Friday after experiencing water interruptions.

Complaints surfaced on Facebook over the weekend with people wanting to know when the water will be restored.

Some complained that there were no tankers doing the rounds, but this was sorted out on Monday.

However, more pipes burst on Tuesday and left residents without water once again.

Ugu District Municipality spokesperson, France Zama, said contractors had experienced a problem in locating a burst pipe.

“There was a burst pipe in Port Edward which took some time to discover the exact location of.

“But the leak was found and repaired. It can also be confirmed that supply in these areas had resumed by Monday,” Zuma said.

He said while there was a break and interruption of the water supply, the municipality provided three static tanks and filled with them water at KFC.

“Another one was at the library and the third on the corner of Izingolweni and Old Pont Road as per liaison with the councillor,” he added.

Ward 1 councillor, Dave Watson said the water supply took longer to be reinstated as another problematic pipe was repaired at the same time.

“The supervisor also wants to repair that long outstanding leak at the bridge at the same time and while the tanks are in place,” he notified residents on Facebook.

He said people who live in the south of Port Edward had been affected the most, going without water for about six days.

“This can be blamed on aged infrastructure and negligence from the Ugu District Municipality,” he said.

He urged residents to use water sparingly in order to bring the level of the reservoir up.

“The level was at 40% on Tuesday morning. Later in the day it had risen to 54% without the repair even being complete.

“Thank you to every one who isa saving water,” said Watson.
