Power corrupts absolutely

2016-04-07 06:00

CORRUPTION is a dishonest action that destroys people’s trust. News of corruption at your bank might make you close your account and invest your money elsewhere.

The noun “corruption” comes from Latin — com, meaning “with, together,” and rumpere, meaning “to break”.

Corruption is dishonest behaviour by those in positions of power, such as managers or government officials. Corruption can include giving or accepting bribes or inappropriate gifts, double dealing, under-the-table transactions, manipulating elections, diverting funds, laundering money and defrauding investors.

Recently we witnessed how a community, who have suffered under severe drought, were offered money for “drought relief” at a political rally disguised as a state visit - food, transport and T-shirts paid for by the hosts.

How is that not bribery and the votes received in exchange not corrupt?
