Progress comes with self-discipline and morals

2018-11-08 06:02

Dear Madam,

To express no confidence and service dissatisfaction in the ANC, numerous communities have vented their frustration and are causing further havoc, by violent demonstrations. Numerous private businesses have been looted, property, buildings, and trains set alight and destroyed.

An intelligent, reasoning, informed demonstrator should address the mob, encouraging them to support another political party, instead of the non-functioning, corrupt ANC.

At present the choice of leadership poses a problem. The leader of a peoples’ party resides in luxury. The opposition party’s unity is destroyed by in-fighting, like squabbling children. However, despite the lack of service delivery, the locals will continue to vote for the ANC, which represents a black majority.

To resolve the cable theft, police officers should frequent the premises of scrap dealers to ascertain the source of copper wire. Police must be reactive and visible.

Members of the Protection Service should issue traffic fines to taxi drivers infringing the traffic regulation of halting their vehicle wherever they please. A traffic offence and the fine is listed for “Stop causing danger/obstruction”. Whilst serving as a volunteer in Randburg in Gauteng, I issued innumerable fines for this offence. The traffic department officials impounded the taxis, until the fine was paid.

Our youth consider themselves as advanced because of the use of computers. No reasoning power is required, as keys are merely depressed, a system acquired by repetition. The youth are unable to make simple, mental calculations, relying on calculators. Attaining a high maths average is no longer a pre-requisite for the study of Psychology at university. Statistics has been removed from the curriculum.

One reads and views the achievements of ancient civilisations of the Chaldeans, the Egyptians, the Romans, the Khymers, the Incas and Aztecs etc. — admiring their temples, roads and aqueduct systems. If one compares with our lack of water, crumbling structures and potholed roads, where is the progress in the 21st century?

When one listens to the uplifting lyrics and music of the previous centuries, there is no comparison with the “modern?” monotonous thumping of discordant noise deafening our ears.

Progress can only be achieved by self-discipline to instil a work ethic, a moral code (honesty) and reasoning.

YOURS FAITHFULLY

Dr L.J. Peltz
