THE Izingolweni office of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is in high spirits after winning a gold award for Best Batho Pele Team at the National Batho Pele Service Awards in Gauteng recently.

The awards honour those in the public service who go the extra mile in service delivery. In April, the Izingolweni office beat 39 local offices within their department to win a gold award in service delivery and in May won the same award again when pitted against other provincial departments.

While they serve both commercial and subsistence farmers, Izingolweni office Deputy Director: Extension and Advisory Services Njabulo Ntshangase said the department has worked hard towards uplifting subsistence farmers to commercial level by providing technical and scientific advice in order to maximise yields and ensure food security. Ntshangase said he is very proud of his team for winning three gold awards within seven months.

“Our team in Izingolweni operates in a largely rural area and is not well resourced, but manages to deliver a high-quality service. The beneficiaries of this service provided strong evidence of how the department went out of its way to empower communities and improve farming mechanisms and methodology.”

He added the recognition is in line with government’s goal to accelerate and share growth, and to deliver social services, which are central to the mandate of the public service.
