Patrons at the Pitstop Restaurant and Pub in Melville were robbed at gun point while out for drinks at the pub at about 1.10 am on Saturday morning.

According to police, seven men wearing balaclavas and gloves entered the pub and pointed firearms at the men and demanded money.

The patrons obliged to the robbers demands, however, one of the patrons was kicked on his body, while sitting down, by one of the robbers.

Port Shepstone SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid said that the men fled the scene with money, cellphones and keys to a Hyundai Getz, belonging to a customer.

“A short while after the robbery, the car was found abandoned on Beach Road in Mellville.

A business robbery case is being investigated by Southport SAPS,” said Wiid.

A robbery of this nature is not a first for the pub and patrons have questioned their safety in the area, however, security company manager from Lazer 911 Basil Lanka said that the incident was a result of the current social climate and there was very little that the business nor the patrons could have done.

“The area is in the outskirts of Port Shepstone in a secluded beach area. It’s geographical setting alone makes it vulnerable to such incidents, so it should be an area that the police watch closely.

“Even if the business did have a security guard, they would not have been able to fight off seven armed men,” said Lanka.
