THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland Cricket Union has a new man in charge.

Ritesh Ramjee took over the post of amateur cricket manager yesterday and was joined by Wessie Westraandt, who has been appointed clubs and facilities manager.

Ramjee has for the past year served with the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union as an administrator for amateur cricket under Jay Naidoo, who was seconded to Pietermaritzburg by the Dolphins franchise to pave the way for a new administration. Ramjee studied sports management and first worked for the Sharks for two years before joining the Durban and Districts Cricket Union.

After spending two years there and looking after club cricket, he moved to the KZN Cricket Union where he was the KFC Mini-Cricket co-ordinator and also looked after schools cricket.

Such was Ramjee’s impact on KFC Mini-Cricket that in less than a year he was named Cricket South Africa’s Co-ordinator of the Year. However, when the position of mini-cricket and schools co-ordinator was split he chose schools. “There was nothing more for me to achieve in mini-cricket, so I took over schools’ cricket,” he told The Witness.

He spent five years in that position before taking over as an administrator in the amateur cricket set-up at the KZN Cricket Union.

A lot needs to be done to boost club cricket in the Inland region, Ramjee reckoned when questioned about his goals.

“We need to get our club cricket structures in place and that will be the feeder to our amateur team. Players from that system need to feed into our amateur teams.”

A coaching administrator still needs to be appointed and Ramjee would like to see it done by the beginning of February. “The appointment of the coaching administrator is vital, because he will conduct coaching courses.”
