THE Ramsgate Community Policing Forum has joined the digital world with a panic button app which residents can use to get help in emergencies.

The Bull Horns Panic Button app was developed by the Intelligence Bureau of South Africa to assist residents in seeking help in a crisis by alerting their local police, community policing officers and loved ones of their location instantly.

Ramsgate CPF was the first on the South Coast to join the app and offers the service free of charge for Ramsgate residents by covering all costs required by the bureau. After downloading the app residents need to add their details, select Ramsgate CPF, and then upload their details and those of their loved ones.

Once alerted about the victim’s location the CPF delegates’ respond to the victim from their list of contacts, including security companies and local authorities closest to the victim’s location.

The Ramsgate CPF project manager Eugene Prinsloo said the app ensures a much better response time for victims of crime.

“We have found that in most situations, when someone is in trouble, they are usually too stressed to dial someone’s number.

“Also, while some people may have panic buttons with security companies at home and business they are not at liberty to use these when they are in public,” said Prinsloo.

The CPF went live on the Bull Horns Panic Button App on google play store and apple itunes on December 1.

Details on how to download and use the app are available on the Ramsgate CPF Facebook group.
