THE Mr and Miss Powerlifter competition, held at Scottburgh Main Beach recently, attracted 36 athletes from all over KZN who came out to compete for the title, and seven of the top 15 positions were awarded to South Coast participants.

“We had more than 200 attendees cheering on the athletes,” said event co-ordinator, Austin Nayager.

Breaking records, Blake Louwrens from Westville was awarded the title of Mr Powerlifter KZN with a pro dead lift of 360kg and the Miss Powerlifter KZN title was awarded to South Coast’s own, Helen Stubbs who won with a dead lift of 170kg.

Representing the South Coast, Carina Ellis, came in second place and Karen Whittle in third place with a one point difference in their scores.

The title winners won supplement packages and gifts over the value of R2 000 each.

“We would like to thank Status Panelbeaters, Barbarion Nutrition, Pure Venom, Hibiscus Propshafts and CV, Jaxx Restaurant and Pravin Anirudhra for sponsoring the trophies,” said Nagayer.

Many records were broken by female athletes like Karen Whittle who broke a record in the bench press category with an outstanding performance.

“We are hoping to motivate and encourage more athletes to join our teams in powerlifting,” he said.
