2017-11-30 06:00

INTERKULTUR is the world’s leading initiator and organiser of international choral competitions. In the almost 30 years since the organisation was established, more than 9 100 choirs and roughly 394 000 singers from 103 nations have taken part in the World Choir Games and Interkultur regional choir competitions.

Since 1988 nearly 200 competitions and festivals have been held. The famous World Choir Games are held every two years on different continents.

This year the 10th World Choir Games 2018 will take place for the first time on the African continent, in Pretoria.

Henriette Brockmann of Interkultur press office said in a statement that, there are only 10 days left to register a choir for the World Choir Games 2018.

She said this is the world’s largest choir competition – also known as the Olympics of Choral Music.

“The competition will take place from July 4 until July 14, 2018, celebrating its 10th anniversary event for the first time on the African continent,” said Brockmann.

She said that the competition is open to amateur choirs from all over the world.

“Two separate competitions reflect the spectrum of the choirs’ levels of accomplishment and give every choir the opportunity to express its abilities in the right kind of competition.

“Participation is the highest honour, all choirs, regardless of their present artistic level of achievement, have the opportunity to present themselves in the World Choir Games and gather valuable experience,” she said.

Brockmann said the champions competition is designed for choirs which have corresponding international competitive experience and have already proven their abilities in concerts and international choral competitions.

“Since the beginning, the event fascinates singers worldwide, every two years in different countries and on different continents. This year’s competition will once again put a new cultural flavour - nine official languages in South Africa, prove the variety of South African culture and its traditions.”

The last day for registration is on December 1, forms available on
