THE main reservoir which feeds Palm Beach with water is in a shocking state and the Ugu District Municipality is apparently aware of it.

Ward councillor, Dave Watson, said he has written to Ugu on numerous occasions, informing them that the reservoir needs attention.

“Water has been leaking from the reservoir for years. Clean drinking water is being wasted in the middle of a drought and one can only imagine how many litres have been wasted over the years,” said Watson.

Apart from that, there are components that are meant to be covered and not exposed.

“The main valve cluster leading to the reservoir has a cover lying next to it. It’s supposed to be sealed. A child or an animal could fall in there, and the water could become contaminated,” he said.

Watson said the property which the reservoir is situated on is a danger zone and unhygienic.

“The components that do have covers on them are so rusty. There is no security as well, apart from the fact that someone lives in a container on the property.”

Ugu District Municipality spokesperson, France Zama, said the municipality sent out an area superintendent to the site to conduct an assessment with the intention of scoping the rectifications.

“The actual rectifications will have to be carried out through an external service provider. The municipality will ensure that the rectification is completed by end of March,” said Zama.
