Response to ‘diatribe uncalled for’

2016-02-04 06:00

THIS is a response to the letter by Bruce and Sue Hulley last week.

Mr Hulley, your apparent ignorance and apparent lack of comprehension are abysmal. Why would I have majored in Biblical studies and have been head of the Religious Education Department? Why would I teach for more than 30 years at religious schools and assist with the organising of mass? Why would I have arranged a religious school tour to Europe, including an audience with the Pope? Why would I have been appointed to arrange the centenary celebration for a religious school, convened at the Standard Bank Arena? Why would I have produced a ballet using Handel’s Creation and the Pie Jesus? In addition, we (you and I) have attended the Writers’ Forum on numerous occasions, when I have embodied a religious ethos in my stories.

My letter focused on the commercialism of Christmas. Where in the Bible are there references to Christmas trees with garish lights and decorations, figures of Father Christmas and unruly behaviour? I deplore the lack of self-discipline and/or behaviour of excesses of gluttony and addiction to alcohol – indicative in one’s repulsive, massive bulk – instead of assisting the starving population (more than 50% of South Africans – verify with the Statistics SA).

The Christmas period deprived local residents (ratepayers) of basic services of water and electricity. Not everyone, like you, has a generator and can easily afford to purchase water. In addition we were exposed to filth, litter, dirt and unacceptable noise levels, including the illegal explosions of fireworks.

Once again, I would like to express my gratitude and admiration to those who distributed free water. A special thanks is extended to Gift of The Givers for their assistance to all during times of emergencies.

Dr L.J. Peltz
