Response to ‘Lifesavers need proper equipment’ letter

2017-08-10 06:03

THANK you for allowing me to respond through the medium of your newspaper to a letter published last week from an irate beach patron regarding a lack of proper equipment on the beach.

My company prides itself on delivering a good service and has been doing so for over 15 years.

We employ over 100 lifeguards all drawn from the area and employ three supervisors to maintain operational standards during our allotted duty periods.

A supervisory inspection and complete stock take had been conducted at all beaches prior to the beginning of season and after that our supervisors have relied on the lifeguards to inform them if any equipment has been lost, stolen, damaged, etc., a practice the lifeguards are very aware of.

Subsequent to this incident, we have now implemented an equipment checklist that our supervisors will now be completing on a daily basis to avoid solely relying on the lifeguards to report damaged equipment.

Of interest to note is that the missing fins were located by another lifeguard at St Michaels beach.

All our equipment is branded and is easy to identify, hence the lifeguards on duty approaching the young member of public, who was bodyboarding at the time in possession of the fins.

Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the member of public actually purchased the set of fins from the lifeguards on duty at Banana Beach.

The company is taking disciplinary steps against the lifeguards in question.

We commit ourselves to continually improve our service and are quite happy to receive any feedback and to act accordingly, please feel free to contact the office during office hours on 039 312 1291 should you have any further complaints or suggestions regarding the lifeguard service
