Ride or run to victory

2018-06-28 06:00

THE South Coast Fever MTB Series 2018 has expanded to include trail runs and fun walks and rides in each mountain biking race in the series. This means that everyone can enjoy the scenic and diverse trail terrains, ranging from beach and desert to forest and game reserve.

Races forming part of the South Coast Fever MTB Series 2018 include the Sardine MTB Race, starting on July 8 at the Port Edward Holiday Resort and the Lake Eland Classic, being held on October 7 at the Lake Eland Game Reserve.

Organiser Michael Bester said the vision of the series, which is in its third year, was to bring the strengths of individual races (some of which have been going for more than 15 years) together in one mega MTB series to have a bigger impact in the sporting community and provide larger exposure to the KZN South Coast. The series also aims to keep alive the Burry Stander legacy of developing cycling in the region, and to attract an increased number of amateur and professional sports people, as well as holidaymakers.

He adds: “The series isn’t just for a select few, but for everybody who enjoys the outdoors and adventure and who wants to embrace a healthy lifestyle.”

The development of the sport is key to the event. The series sponsors a group of ten riders, with the assistance of Mandie Stander, with full kit, entry fees, bike assistance, and training, with some of the riders finishing in the Top 10 at races.

The Cycling for Mobility, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and schools like Westbury Preparatory are just some of the organisations that greatly benefit from the series, and the sport, by hosting or assisting with the events through donations from the race organisers.

Justin Mackrory, CEO of UGU South Coast Tourism and co-founder of the event, commented that mountain biking is the fastest growing sport in the country and that “the KZN South Coast is ideally suited to host the series, with its multitude of MTB and running trails and its already well-known joBerg2c and sani2c races, both of which end in Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast.”
