SAN Lameer Estate, which is one of the most sought after establishments on the South Coast and South Africa, celebrates its 40th birthday this year. The estate was the very first golfing estate developed in South Africa and is just as renowned now as it was at its inception.

The land on which San Lameer has been developed has a rich history, dating back to 1938 when the state granted the land to Colonel G.H. Langeler, which was then developed into a private estate.

Langeler was a keen environmentalist, introducing indigenous flora into the grounds while always keeping the sensitive balance of the ecosystem in mind.

At the time of his death in the 1970’s, his trust specified that any new owner should continue with the conservation sentiments of the land. Still today, San Lameer has a strong focus on the sustainability of the surrounding environment.

In 1974, insurance giants Sanlam purchased the land and following numerous conservation studies, the scheme stipulated that any development on the property must take place on only 40% of the estate, with 60% being dedicated to maintaining its natural state.

On July 7, 1977, San Lameer was proclaimed a private township.

Since the inception of the concept of an exclusive Mediterranean type of holiday resort for the more affluent South African, Sanlam has complied and developed the township in line with the original philosophy and wishes of Langeler.

In 1990, Sanlam started negotiations with the homeowners association and succeeded in exchanging land and purchasing additional land, among others two banana farms adjacent to the main road, to construct the 18-hole championship golf course and clubhouse designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes.

The founder members representing Sanlam, Messrs Ronnie Masson, Hendrik Bester and Pierre Steyn, had a vision in mind to create the first premier golf estate in South Africa, which was successfully transformed into reality when the golf course and club house were completed and officially opened on November 7, 1992 by Dr

D.J. de Villiers, Minister of Public Enterprises. The course and club house certainly enhanced the extraordinary ambience of San Lameer and even today these magnificent sport and recreational facilities are still one of the prominent features making the estate so appealing.

San Lameer and the club is also home to some unique golf tournaments, which became tremendously popular among members and visitors alike.

San Lameer is located on a 200 hectare nature conservancy surrounded by tropical vegetation and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

The estate is comprised of 622 privately owned villas, which surround the 18-hole golf course and exclusive hotel and spa. Our homeowners are able to immerse themselves in all of the beauty that nature has to offer.

San Lameer really does encompass the most favourable attributes for both permanent and seasonal living. Its location and surrounding environment are unrivalled by many; its facilities are endless and the investment growth notable.

San Lameer wants to thank each and every homeowner for its participation in growing and developing this estate to its full potential.
