ALTHOUGH nothing similar to years gone by, some good catches were netted between St Mikes and Ramsgate beaches on Monday morning when sardines made an unexpected appearance.

KZN Sharks Board’s head of operations Mike Anderson-Reade said the activity was very unlikely to be seen again on the South Coast this year as the sardines have already made their way up the coast.

“On Tuesday they were spotted on the upper coast in Mnini beach near Mgababa. There was some activity at Warner Beach as well on Wednesday morning,” said Anderson-Reade.

Bathing remained closed on South Coast beaches after shark nets were removed last week in anticipation of strong winds as well as the sardines.

“Right now we are just playing it safe, but we will monitor the situation.

“I will fly down to make some observations and hope some nets will be replaced so bathing can take place at some beaches,” said Anderson-Reade.
