Sentences dealt to Margate murderers

2018-07-26 06:01

AS a result of hard work and dedication by Margate SAPS Detective Sergeant Wellington Gumede, two people were sentenced for assault, rape, robbery and murder recently.

Ayanda Shabane and Nkosiyezwe Mzelemu, from Izingolweni, were recently sentenced at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court.

In December 2016, a group of four friends comprising Prince Vika (19), Sihle Madondo (19), and two girls, were attacked in Ridge Road, Margate.

The accused followed the group and, when they caught up to them, Shabane produced a knife and stabbed Vika in the chest. Vika later died at the scene.

They then robbed the 17-year-old girl of her sneakers and cellphone. When she tried to flee, Shabane caught her from behind and stabbed her on the lower back before dragging her into the nearby bush and raping her.

Shabane was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment — 15 years for murder, 10 years for rape, 10 years for robbery and six months for assault.

Mzelemu was sentenced to six years for robbery.
