Sewage ‘laces’ Mpenjati lagoon

2017-05-11 06:02

HORRID images and the stench of sewage lacing the Mpenjati Lagoon shoreline has shocked residents and tourists who said they believe this came from a tanker.

Di Sunter, a resident in the area, said the sewage had not been there a month before.

“We saw all this scum on the lagoon shoreline, which I thought was very strange as the sea was not dirty and there was no corresponding scum on the sea shoreline,” said Sunter.

“We went to look at the scum and were horrified to find it was raw sewage with solids, paper and sanitary towels. It was evident this was definitely a tanker dump, in my opinion, and it was not just a once-off,” said Sunter.

Sunter said she had seen this kind of dumping in Munster. At the dump in Munster, Tongazi, sewerage tankers dump directly into the reeds there which flow into the Tongazi River.

A Port Shepstone resident said negligent sewage dumping was an issue all over the South Coast.

“Even sitting in a restaurant in Umtentweni near the shoreline I could smell the sewage from the deck and it was not from the restaurant itself,” said the resident.

Ugu District Municipality said they were unaware of the dumping incidents.

“We have alerted both our water services and environmental health services teams to visit the site and conduct investigations accordingly,” said spokesperson France Zama.
